01: so easy a caveman can do it

If you could bottle “walking” in a pill and sell it, shit, watch out ozempic.

walking’s hella simple and nearly effortless so you’d think there’s no way this would make any difference to your health - errrr, wrong friend. lacing up your shoes and walking around the block (literally, around the fucking block) has a tremendous impact on your health.

But we still need to be reminded to stand by our apple watch…

here’s my opinion.

we’re trained to believe that doing hard things yields positive outcomes. sometimes, yes. but oftentimes it’s the little things done consistently that actually make more of a difference. in the case of walking it’s something the majority of us do on a daily basis and take for granted. It’s free, easy to do, and requires little to no effort; so we must have to make it harder to get results, right? Insert rucking, incline treadmill walking, hiking, etc. wrong.

a quick 5 minute walk, believe it or not, truly does move the needle in a positive direction on various aspects of your health — diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, etc.

you don’t need to run a marathon to be healthy.

because walking’s so easy it gets pushed to the back of our to-do list and often, ends up not getting done. I’m not saying don’t do hard things, do hard things, what I’m getting at is don’t ignore the little things along the way.

this spew of consciousness stemmed from an article i read in the times about the 10,000 step walking myth. the study referred to in the article found that simply increasing your steps from 2,000 to 4,000 a day resulted in a 36 percent lower risk of death, while moving from 4,000 to 7,000 steps further dropped that risk by 17 percent. this is encouraging, it’s further proving that those micro walks you do, that require little to no effort, compound and have an immense impact on your mortality risk.

so lace up whatever shoes, or birkenstocks, you have lying around and go walk around the block. i guarantee you won’t regret it.

:)
